Dental Implant FAQs

Am I eligible for dental implants?

During your initial consultation, our team will ask if you suffer from diabetes, gum disease, tooth decay, or certain autoimmune diseases. This information will help determine if you are a good candidate for implants.

If you are a smoker, you will need to quit before treatment since nicotine and tobacco can increase your risk of infection and slow down the healing process.

What is the cost of dental implants?

This will vary from patient to patient since the state of your oral health, the number of implants, and other factors will determine your overall cost.

  • Oral health – Before receiving an implant, your mouth must be healthy. If not, preparatory procedures such as root canals, teeth removal, and tissue or bone grafts may need to be performed.
  • Number of implants – Our team will determine how many implants you should receive. Those with weaker jaws may require more implants.

Though dental implants may cost more upfront, they are a great investment in the long run. Unlike traditional bridges and dentures, dental implants are made to last a lifetime (with good oral hygiene) and you won’t need to make visits to the office to have them constantly readjusted.

What to expect during a dental implant procedure?
  1. Initial ConsultationOur team will take x-rays of your mouth to analyze your jawbone structure and ask you questions about your health records. After gathering all this information, we will determine if you can proceed with an implant procedure. During this time, we’ll also let you know of any preparatory treatments you need, such as a sinus lift or bone graft, before getting an implant.
  2. Implant placementBefore the surgery, you will be put under local anesthesia either with a sedative or general IV anesthesia. Your doctor will skillfully make small incisions to your gums where your implants will be. Titanium screws will be placed into those incisions. The incisions will be stitched close around the screws. Then, you will be sent home and your gums will need to heal for 3-6 months. During this time, your jawbone will fuse with the implant through a process called osseointegration. After 3-6 months, you will return to the office to have your incisions reopened. We will insert a metal piece called an abutment. Your gums will be stitched closed with the exposed abutment. A temporary crown will be attached to the abutment while the gums heal.
  3. Permanent Crown PlacementThe last step is the placement of your permanent crown. You now have a restored smile you can show off to everyone!

How do I care for my dental implants right after the surgery?

Make sure to do the following tasks after your procedure. Not doing these things can cause unnecessary complications and prolong the healing process.

  1. Regularly rinse your mouth with salt water or an antiseptic solution
  2. Use over-the-counter anti-inflammatories and pain medicine
  3. Avoid eating chewy and crunchy foods

When your gums have healed, you can treat and clean your implants like your natural teeth! Make sure to brush and floss daily to reduce the risk of gum disease. Attend your routine appointments with Mission Viejo Dental Associates so our team can make sure your implants and mouth are healthy and in tip-top shape!
